OriginPanthenol is the provitamin (a substance that the body can convert into a specific vitamin) for vitamin B5. In this case, when panthenol is applied topically, it is rapidly converted into vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid.
Main benefitsVitamin B5 binds to and effectively retains water, moisturising the skin and helping it to maintain its softness and elasticity. Unlike other common moisturising ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, panthenol has the added benefit of acting as both a humectant and an emollient. Humectants attract and bind water to the skin, while emollients seal the cracks in the skin, keeping that water locked in leaving it soft, smooth and more supple.
PropertiesIt has humectant and emollient properties. It has a similar effect on the hair and skin, increasing both softness and shine, which is why it is commonly found in many hair products, especially conditioners and leave-in products. In make-up, it is used for its emollient and moisturising qualities. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and is involved in activating the proliferation of cells important for wound healing and restoring skin barrier function.
Target audienceIn general, panthenol is suitable for all skin types and in particular for those with dry or scaly skin.
FrequencyYou can use products containing panthenol on a daily basis.
AssociationHumectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerine, as well as ceramides, work very well with Panthenol.
Dissociation/ ContraindicationIn general, panthenol can be used with most ingredients.
Side effectsAs with any other ingredient, an allergy is always possible, although the probability is low.
UsePanthenol is fairly harmless as it blends well with most other ingredients. It works well on freshly cleansed skin. Since it is found in so many products, it is best to follow the product recommendations when determining how many times a day you should use it
